Professional Interventions for the New Conventional Family

Suitable for Professionals Working with Families and Children in a ‘Stepfamily’ Context

As professionals working with families and children, at some point in time we encounter members of a stepfamily be children or and step-couples. Have you wondered how traditional family interventions differ from stepfamily interventions? You may or may not be aware that they are different.

The couple relationship in a stepfamily is the most vulnerable relationship in the family, requiring special attention and skill development. Couples are forming their relationship in the framework of other existing relationships. Conflict from other relationships (stepparent-stepchild) in the family extends into the stepfamily couple relationship and can harmfully affect the relationship or marriage. Existing mainstream marriage, family life, and parent education programs do not typically address the unique needs of stepfamilies.

Carla Hogg is a specialised stepfamily counsellor and is running a one-day workshop in partnership with Centacare in Wagga Wagga on Friday the 24th November 2017.

Carla is currently the director of Instep Solutions providing therapeutic and psychoeducation services. She has been a social worker for 17 years and has a strong record working with families and children through case-management and counselling roles.

As well as being a qualified social Worker with a Masters in Policy Studies and undergoing a Doctorate in Social Work, Carla has worked for several government and non-government organisations in the field of child protection, youth, child consultancy and post separation family and child counselling within a family systems framework and Social Work academic teaching at Charles Sturt University. Carla is also an accredited stepfamily counsellor providing services within a stepfamily framework to blended/stepfamilies.

Carla has made contributions at international conferences, has trained professionals at a local level and is a member of the Family Law Pathways Network, Australian Association of Social workers and a member of the International Consortium for Social Development.
