On Sunday 6th August, Centacare was part of the ‘Lets Tackle Domestic Violence’ annual event, held at the Wagga Brothers and Wagga Kangaroos Rugby League Match at the Equex Centre, Wagga.
This event aims to raise awareness of Domestic and Family Violence and it’s impact on families. Susan Joyce and Shelly Larner attended the event on behalf of Centacare, and Centacare also funded Tanya Menzies, of Dragontales Face Painting to provide face painting and balloon art for the children at the event.
This is an extremely worthwhile event that Centacare support, and all monies raised from the major raffle were donated to a local organization Called Liberty From Violence. This grass roots charity began with staff members from the Mecure Motel putting gifts for young children under a Christmas tree, and has grown to a group providing immediate help to families fleeing violence.
“We are attempting to break the cycle of violence by enabling women to leave a violent situation and not have to return,” said Liberty From Violence Founder, Jenny Davis.
“If we can provide funding for travel, funding for clothes, funding for accommodation it means they are not tempted to go back into a violent situation.” The charity can assist with the provision of cash, mobile phones, food, furniture and household items as well as personal essentials to help people get through the immediate crisis.
A great day was had by all, despite the cold, seeing the Kangaroos come up winners in the first grade match against Brothers, 38-14.
